Operation Safe Haven, a specialized military unit responsible for maintaining peace in Plateau State and surrounding areas, has refuted allegations of its soldiers firing upon innocent civilians during recent attacks in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Maj. Samson Zhakom, the Media Officer of the operation, rejected these claims in a statement issued on Monday in Jos.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, the Coalition of Bokkos Ethnic Youth Nationalities had accused soldiers of shooting civilians, exacerbating the vulnerability of residents in the area.

The group demanded the removal of the Commander of OPSH Step-Up Headquarters 2 in Bokkos, asserting that security agencies had failed to quell recent killings in some communities within the council.

However, Zhakom dismissed the allegations as baseless, suggesting they were intended to tarnish the reputation of the military and other security agencies in the state.

He further clarified that the group’s assertion of a confrontation between security agencies and vigilantes was misleading, emphasizing the professionalism of the personnel during the encounter.

Zhakom praised the continuous deployment of troops for over 72 hours, ensuring the protection of law-abiding citizens and vulnerable communities.

Regarding the alleged vigilante involved in the incident, he revealed the discovery of sophisticated weapons in the possession of the deceased, contrary to claims of the individual using traditional firearms for community defense.

Additionally, Zhakom emphasized that the alleged vigilante was already deceased before the arrival of troops, dismissing accusations of his killing as an attempt to absolve him of involvement in the attacks and counter-reprisals.

He characterized the call for the removal of the military commander in Bokkos as malicious, designed to undermine troop morale and hinder their lawful duties.

Zhakom cautioned against attempts to manipulate public opinion against security agencies, highlighting the risks associated with such actions.

Despite challenges, he assured the public of security agencies’ commitment to maintaining law and order in the region through proactive measures.
