Bobrisky, a widely recognized cross-dresser, recently came under scrutiny following allegations that he had paid for special treatment during his incarceration for naira abuse. A viral audio recording claimed that he bribed officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to secure preferential conditions in prison, sparking widespread debate.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tunji-Ojo explained that the situation exposed deeper systemic problems within the country’s institutions. “When there is an institutional issue, a quick fix isn’t enough,” he said. “We formed a committee to investigate all related matters—not just this specific case but also broader issues, such as officials absconding from duty. It is a reflection of a deeper institutional problem.”
Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of comprehensive reforms within Nigeria’s institutions to ensure such incidents do not recur. “We cannot allow today’s problems to become the problems of tomorrow,” he added.
Additional allegations emerged from blogger Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, who accused Bobrisky of paying ₦15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to avoid money laundering charges. Following Bobrisky’s sentencing in April 2024, Otse claimed that Bobrisky further bribed officials to secure better prison conditions. However, Bobrisky has denied these claims.
In response, both the EFCC and NCoS launched investigations into the allegations. The House of Representatives also intervened, calling for testimony from those involved. Additionally, the Federal Government suspended several senior NCoS officers.
On September 30, 2024, Tunji-Ojo inaugurated a committee to probe alleged misconduct within the NCoS. After a thorough investigation, the panel concluded that there was no evidence to support claims that Bobrisky received special treatment or slept outside the custodial center during his six-month sentence from April 12 to August 5, 2024, affirming that his detention was in line with correctional policies.
