FG Makes Tertiary Institution Ranking Compulsory, Issues Fresh Directive

The Federal Government has directed universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria to participate compulsorily in the national tertiary education ranking exercise.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Tuesday in Abuja during a meeting with the Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the existing committee has been expanded and renamed the Nigerian Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee to reflect its broader mandate of assessing institutions across the country’s tertiary education system.

Under the new framework, universities, polytechnics and colleges of education will be evaluated using a unified national ranking system designed to measure institutional performance and educational standards.

The assessment will consider several areas, including academic performance, research activities, institutional development, available facilities and resources, as well as other indicators of the quality of education provided by each institution.

Alausa explained that the ranking exercise would enable tertiary institutions to compare their performance, identify areas requiring improvement and monitor their progress over time.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as an important step towards strengthening accountability and improving the quality of education across the country.

Ahmad maintained that healthy competition among institutions would encourage them to critically assess their performance, address identified shortcomings and continuously improve their standards.

She said the ranking exercise would help create an environment where institutions are motivated to close existing gaps and provide better educational outcomes for students.
