This appeal came after reports emerged that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) officials had threatened the Lagos-based corps member, Ushie Uguamaye, for speaking out against the government.
Uguamaye had posted a TikTok video expressing dissatisfaction with the hardships Nigerians are facing due to the government’s economic reforms. Her video quickly went viral, drawing the attention of NYSC officials, who later allegedly contacted her, demanding she remove the video.
In an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, TUC President Festus Osifo emphasized that the corps member’s comments stemmed from frustration, urging the government to show tolerance towards critics rather than targeting individuals.
He stated, “The government needs to understand that people are frustrated, hungry, and tired. If they express their frustration, the government should not take it personally and go after these individuals.”
Osifo further questioned, “What harm could a young lady performing her NYSC duties possibly do to bring down the government? She is simply airing her personal frustration.”
He urged the government to be patient and tolerant, recognizing the immense challenges Nigerians are facing today. However, he also advised critics to express their dissatisfaction in a respectful and appropriate manner.
