The Nigerian government has reassured its citizens residing in Ghana of renewed commitment to addressing various challenges they face. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), conveyed these assurances during a Townhall Meeting at the African Diaspora Forum (DAF) Award 2024 in Accra, Ghana. Participants raised issues such as high residence permit fees in Ghana, the trafficking of under-aged individuals, the status of Nigerian traders, and the need for an accredited university list to protect Nigerian students. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, received commendations for innovations in passport application processes.

Dabiri-Erewa also shared insights into NIDCOM’s upcoming initiatives, including the Diaspora Housing Mortgage Scheme launching in April. Through the Federal Mortgage Bank, the Federal Government plans to provide a N50 million mortgage to support home ownership for Nigerians abroad, excluding Lagos and Abuja.

Highlighting other NIDCOM initiatives like the Diaspora Investment Summit, Diaspora Quarterly Lecture, National Diaspora Day, and National Diaspora Merit Award, Dabiri-Erewa underscored their role as platforms to address challenges faced by Nigerians in Ghana.

Ambassador Usman Aliyu Bakori, Head of Mission, expressed gratitude to Dabiri-Erewa for prioritizing diaspora issues and promptly addressing concerns. He welcomed the housing scheme proposal, emphasizing the need for financial support from the Federal Government, particularly in light of fluctuating exchange rates affecting operations in Ghana.
