In a letter dated December 5, 2024, Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, informed the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors about the emerging threat posed by the XEC variant, which has demonstrated a “growth advantage” over other circulating COVID-19 strains.
Dr. Anuma stated: “I am directed to inform you of the newly detected XEC variant, which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries. This variant has shown a growth advantage, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
The letter calls for heightened vigilance at healthcare facilities, urging medical directors to activate emergency alert systems and remain especially vigilant when treating patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms. Health institutions are also advised to strengthen data sharing protocols with the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies.
Dr. Anuma further stressed: “Alert systems should be immediately activated in hospitals to ensure a high index of suspicion for COVID-like symptoms. Coordination with stakeholders is crucial for tracking the variant’s spread, assessing its effects, and implementing containment measures.”
The Ministry also emphasized the importance of timely and transparent data sharing to ensure a coordinated response to the emerging threat.
