Shekarau And Northern Democrats Establish Task Force To Evaluate Tax ReformsA former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, alongside key members of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), has formed a technical committee to review the controversial tax reform bills currently under consideration in the National Assembly. This move was announced in a statement released on Friday by the league’s spokesperson, Ladan Salihu, in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Salihu explained that the decision to form the committee was prompted by the widespread criticism and concerns surrounding the proposed legislation, including the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024, and the Nigeria Tax Bill, 2024. The committee is tasked with completing its review within one week and will present its findings and recommendations to the LND for further discussion.

The tax reform bills, which were introduced by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024, have sparked heated debates across the country. Critics argue that the proposed changes could disproportionately impact certain regions, particularly the North, leading to calls for revisions or a full withdrawal of the bills. Northern lawmakers, governors, and other stakeholders have voiced concerns about the potential economic repercussions of the legislation.

The statement emphasized that at the end of its review, the committee would publicly present its findings in both electronic and tabular formats, ensuring that its recommendations are effectively communicated to policymakers, legislators, the media, and the Nigerian public. The LND expressed confidence that the committee’s recommendations will be well-reasoned and aimed at promoting equitable economic growth, while supporting sustainable development across the nation.
