FG Reacts With Praise As Ghana Hands Tough Sentence To Nigerian Human Trafficking Ringleader

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has hailed the conviction and sentencing of a notorious Nigerian human trafficking kingpin, Chukwudi Nwachukwu, in Ghana.

The Achimota Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong, sentenced Nwachukwu to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour after months of intensive investigation and surveillance by Ghanaian authorities.

Earlier in the year, 10 Nigerian girls, aged between 15 and 18, were rescued through a joint operation involving the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana Chapter, the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, and Ghanaian security agencies.

The victims were safely repatriated to Nigeria with the support of NiDCOM, led by Dabiri-Erewa, alongside a delegation from Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu.

In a statement issued by the Commission’s Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Dabiri-Erewa expressed satisfaction that justice had finally been served.

The court also ordered the convict to pay GH₵15,000 in restitution to each of the ten victims.

According to court findings, Nwachukwu lured the girls to Ghana under false pretenses and forced them into prostitution, a crime that drew outrage from both Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities.

NiDCOM confirmed that the victims have since been fully rehabilitated and reunited with their families in Nigeria through the assistance of NAPTIP.

Dabiri-Erewa urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant over their children’s movements, warning that human traffickers will always be tracked down and punished, no matter how long it takes.
