This development was confirmed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Friday, February 7, 2025.

According to the Minister, the new system aims to ease the difficulties associated with traveling to embassies and enduring long wait times, by offering direct digital access to Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) services.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted the crucial role the Nigerian diaspora plays in the nation’s growth and emphasized the government’s responsibility to provide efficient, professional services to its citizens abroad.

“We are excited to announce a major improvement in our national service delivery under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, with the launch of the Contactless Passport Renewal System across Europe, following its successful rollout in Canada,” the statement read.

“Today marks another milestone in our mission to simplify and enhance the efficiency of government services for Nigerians at home and abroad, in line with this administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.”

The Minister explained that, similar to the system in Canada, this new initiative removes the usual barriers associated with passport renewals. Nigerians in Europe can now renew their passports entirely online from the comfort of their homes or offices.

“This system not only reduces the need for travel and cuts down on long waiting periods but also brings NIS services directly to citizens’ digital devices,” Tunji-Ojo added.

He further stressed that introducing this system in Europe reaffirms the government’s commitment to:

Efficiency: By enabling passport renewals without the need for physical presence, the process time is significantly reduced.
