Among the committee’s terms of reference is the examination of whether these recently established private universities possess the necessary facilities, appropriate management structures, adequate funding for programs, and the requisite staff. This initiative is in addition to the periodic accreditation exercises conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Nigeria currently boasts a total of 147 private universities, with 107 of them having been established within the last 15 years. The list includes institutions like Adeleke University in Osun State, Baze University in FCT Abuja, Landmark University in Kwara State, and Glorious Vision University (formerly Samuel Adegboyega University) in Edo State, among others.

This move by the Federal Government reflects a commitment to ensuring the quality and standards of higher education in the country. As the committee begins its investigation, it is expected that a thorough review of the specified universities will be conducted to assess their compliance with established criteria.
