The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has unveiled its plans to validate the National Occupational Standards for the conversion and maintenance of electric vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. Joseph Osanipin, the Director-General of NADDC, made this announcement during a validation workshop for the draft of the national standards for auto gas vehicles in Nasarawa.
The primary goal of the workshop is to create a blueprint for skills development and standardized operational procedures in the conversion, calibration, and maintenance of these emerging automotive energy sources. This initiative aligns with the government’s renewed hope agenda, with the potential to generate employment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, plans are in motion to establish more CNG gas stations in Abuja.
Osanipin highlighted that upon approval of the draft by the National Assembly, the initiative would contribute to job creation, decrease dependence on petrol and diesel, and address environmental concerns. He stated, “If we achieve what the Federal Government wants us to achieve with autogas, it will reduce the dependency on PMS and diesel and mitigate environmental concerns. It will also create more jobs and wealth for the nation.”
The workshop’s essential purpose is to ensure the inclusion of input from all relevant stakeholders in crafting this national document. Osanipin emphasized that the document should adhere to international best practices, striving for international standards to elevate the auto sector to a global level.
He underlined the significance of the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan 2023–2033, which was relaunched by the Federal Government in 2023. This plan aims to revitalize the automotive industry, promoting sustainable growth through technological advancements and skills development.
In conclusion, Osanipin stressed the importance of international standards in driving the automotive sector toward global benchmarks. The NADDC’s initiatives are aligned with the government’s efforts to foster growth, create employment opportunities, and establish a more environmentally friendly automotive industry.
