Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Muslim cleric in Kaduna, has requested government authorization to engage in talks with the bandits responsible for the abduction of 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in the Chikun Local Government Area. Advocating for a diplomatic approach, Gumi urged President Bola Tinubu to deviate from the stance of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who rejected negotiations.
The assailants, who attacked the Kuriga area of Chikun LGA, shot at their victims before seizing approximately 280 pupils and teachers from both schools. This incident unfolded just a day after insurgents kidnapped 200 internally displaced women in Borno State while they were fetching firewood in the bush.
Recent events also include bandit invasions in Gonin-Gora, prompting residents to protest against abductions and barricade the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway. Despite the government’s refusal to engage in dialogue with the bandits for the release of the schoolchildren, Gumi asserted that negotiation is crucial not only for the Kuriga case but for all similar situations.
Expressing discontent with the government’s reluctance to negotiate, Gumi stated, “The government’s stand of no negotiation with the bandits is an unfortunate position.” He suggested using the successful approach employed in releasing passengers abducted on the Abuja–Kaduna train in 2022.
Ready to lead a comprehensive dialogue, Gumi emphasized his religious duty to promote peace and called on President Tinubu’s administration to reconsider its stance on negotiation with bandits. Gumi, known for previous negotiations on behalf of state governments, highlighted the importance of dialogue in resolving the abduction crisis, contrasting it with the approach of the former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
In May 2021, Gumi’s involvement in negotiating the release of abducted individuals earned commendation from a parent of students kidnapped at the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in Kaduna, emphasizing the cleric’s constructive role in addressing the country’s banditry challenges.
