FG Unveils Criteria For Selection For ₦50,000 Presidential Grant

The Nigerian government has revealed its method for selecting recipients of the ₦50,000 Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme, stating that individuals will be chosen randomly and digitally from the pool of applicants. The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, overseeing the implementation of the grant, emphasized that the selection process will be entirely digital to avoid any physical interference. Verification will occur digitally, eliminating the need for direct contact with applicants post-verification. Disbursements will be automatic for those who pass the screening.

Out of the 3.6 million applicants, only 1 million will be selected as beneficiaries. The scheme, initiated on March 9, 2024, provides financial grants of ₦50,000 to eligible small business owners across various sectors, including trading, food services, ICT, transportation, creatives, and artisans in all 774 local government areas.

Targeting specific demographics, the scheme aims to allocate 70% of grants to women and youths, 10% to people with disabilities, and 5% to senior citizens, with the remaining 15% distributed among other demographics.

The Ministry clarified that disbursements are not based on specific criteria but on the order of application verification. Each local government area is estimated to have around 1,290 beneficiaries, totaling one million nationwide.

Verification now requires both the National Identification Number (NIN) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN). The selection process is automated and random, with no human intervention.

Due to the thorough verification process, conducted in batches to minimize errors, the ministry expects payments to commence at the end of May, following the closure of applications on April 17.
