Filmmaker Mary Remmy Njoku has urged women to remain vigilant and avoid becoming “victims in Nigeria.”
In a post shared on her Instagram page, Njoku argued that in Nigerian society, women are often blamed and made to feel responsible even in cases where they become victims, sometimes leading to tragic outcomes.
Njoku’s statement comes in response to the recent news of two friends who traveled from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Aba, Abia State, to visit a man they met on Facebook. The two women have since gone missing, while the man, suspected to be involved in organ harvesting, was killed while attempting to evade arrest.
Her post reads:
“I appeal to ladies never to allow themselves to become ‘victims in Nigeria.’ In our society, when a woman becomes a victim, even to the point of death, she is often blamed and made to feel that it was her fault for suffering.
This message is particularly relevant in light of recent events, including the tragic disappearance of two friends who traveled from Port Harcourt to Aba to visit a man they met on Facebook. While the man, suspected of involvement in organ harvesting, has been killed while attempting to escape arrest, the fate of the two women remains unknown.
Let us remain vigilant and prioritize our safety in all circumstances.”
