Fire Analogy Sparks Debate As Keyamo Justifies US Christmas Day Airstrike
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said Nigeria would have acted irrationally by rejecting assistance from the United States in its fight against terrorism.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Keyamo made the remark on while defending the Federal Government’s collaboration with the U.S. in carrying out airstrikes against terrorist targets, amid public debate over the Christmas Day operation in Sokoto State.
He urged Nigerians to focus on efforts aimed at eliminating terrorism, particularly in the northern part of the country, rather than questioning the partnership.
“When your house is on fire, it would be foolish to stop someone with fire extinguishers from coming in to put it out,” Keyamo said, adding that safeguarding lives should take priority over concerns about sovereignty or privacy when danger is imminent.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has confirmed that the precision airstrikes targeting Islamic State (ISIS) elements in Sokoto State were authorised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement released Friday night, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that the operation was carried out in close coordination with the United States government. He said two major ISIS enclaves located in the Bauni forest axis of Tangaza Local Government Area were successfully hit.
According to Idris, intelligence reports revealed that the locations served as assembly and staging points for foreign ISIS fighters infiltrating Nigeria from the Sahel region in collaboration with local operatives. The cells were allegedly planning large-scale attacks within Nigeria.
The minister stated that the strikes were conducted between 12:12 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2025, following explicit presidential approval.
He explained that the operation followed established command-and-control procedures and involved the Nigerian Armed Forces under the supervision of the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Chief of Defence Staff.
The statement added that the strikes were launched from maritime platforms in the Gulf of Guinea after extensive intelligence gathering, surveillance and operational planning. Sixteen GPS-guided precision munitions were deployed using MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles, successfully neutralising the targeted ISIS elements attempting to penetrate Nigeria through the Sahel corridor.
During the operation, debris from expended munitions reportedly landed in Jabo, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and in Offa, Kwara State, near a hotel. The government said no civilian casualties were recorded, and authorities swiftly secured the affected areas.
Reaffirming its position, the Federal Government said it remains resolute in confronting and dismantling terrorist networks, especially transnational extremist groups threatening Nigeria’s sovereignty and security.
The government also assured citizens that it maintains full control of the nation’s security architecture and remains committed to protecting lives and property, urging Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant as operations against terrorist groups continue nationwide.
