Grace Henry has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, with her appointment taking effect from June 7. The announcement was made in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by Chief Abdul Lauya, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Digital Communications to the Chairman.
The appointment, officially conveyed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, marks a historic moment—Grace Henry becomes both the first woman and the first non-commissioned officer to lead Nigeria’s premier veterans’ organisation.
Chief Lauya described the development as a landmark achievement, noting that it underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing gender inclusion and recognizing merit regardless of military rank. He praised the appointment as a reflection of President Tinubu’s dedication to empowering capable individuals across all sectors of national service.
Henry brings extensive experience to her new role, having previously served as the Director of Corporate Affairs at the Legion’s headquarters in Abuja. She is also the National Coordinator of Female Military Veterans of Nigeria. Born on October 5, 1964, she retired from the Nigerian Army in 2000 after over 25 years of distinguished service.
The Nigerian Legion is a statutory body tasked with supporting the welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration of ex-service personnel and their families. It also plays a key role in organising national remembrance events like Armed Forces Remembrance Day, and is involved in advocacy, public education, and some security-related activities.
President Tinubu, in the statement, expressed full confidence in Grace Henry’s ability to revitalise the Nigerian Legion and urged her to leverage her experience to enhance the institution’s effectiveness and reach.
