Chairing the forum, Chris Alozie Akomas, a former deputy governor of Imo State, emphasized that individuals who have previously served as deputy governors bring essential experience and expertise, qualifying them for membership in the party’s highest decision-making body, the NEC.
Akomas remarked, “We are concerned that deputy governors are not part of the NEC despite the wealth of experience we possess. We hope that this situation will be rectified.”
The former deputy governors extended their well wishes to Ganduje, hoping that he would navigate his role as the party’s national chairman without encountering significant challenges.
Akomas expressed, “We are here to congratulate you on assuming the position of national chairman. We pray that God removes any obstacles, as we acknowledge the immense responsibilities that come with leading the party, especially as it holds power. Our forum transcends party lines, prioritizing unity, national stability, and the greater good.”
Responding to the forum’s sentiments, APC’s national chairman, who himself is a former deputy governor of Kano State under Rabiu Kwankwaso, acknowledged the complexities associated with the role of deputy governors in governance.
Ganduje commented, “The position of Deputy Governor is arguably one of the most challenging positions in governance, not only in Nigeria but globally.
In most places, deputy governors can even contest elections under different party banners, whereas in Nigeria, they must be part of the same ticket.
This position is intricate and demanding, which is why it is often said that God does not have a deputy—everyone is a servant. It’s an area that requires careful navigation.
