Police Officers In Trouble After Viral Video Exposes Alleged Extortion And False Drug Charges
Two police officers attached to the Nasarawa State Police Command have been detained at the Force Headquarters in Abuja over allegations that they unlawfully detained two young travellers and attempted to extort ₦150,000 from one of them.
The Police Complaint Response Unit disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, following the circulation of a viral video showing armed police officers attached to the Ado Area Command engaging in an altercation with the travellers.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the two young men were reportedly returning from a wedding and heading to the airport for their journey back to Lagos when they were stopped by the officers.
The Complaint Response Unit said the officers featured in the video had been identified and invited to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation.
However, the police unit disclosed that the team leader, Inspector Sani Mikailu, reportedly died two days earlier under circumstances that had yet to be established. As a result, only two officers appeared for the scheduled interview, and they were subsequently detained pending the conclusion of the investigation and further directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
The unit assured the public that its findings and recommendations would be forwarded to the IGP as soon as practicable.
In the viral account of the incident, one of the travellers alleged that the officers stopped their vehicle for a stop-and-search operation before taking him to an isolated location. He further claimed that the officers seized his phone and drove away with him.
His companion reportedly went to the police station with a lawyer to secure his release and met with the Divisional Police Officer, who allegedly questioned the victim’s condition and remarked that he had no visible mark on his face.
The DPO was also accused of demanding ₦100,000 to facilitate the victim’s bail after the officers allegedly presented cannabis, claiming it had been recovered from him. An additional ₦50,000 was reportedly requested for fuel expenses incurred while transporting the victim to the station.
The victim allegedly refused to write a statement implicating himself in a drug-related offence. The officers were subsequently accused of preparing a statement themselves, claiming that drugs had been found in his possession.
The police investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the officers have yet to be conclusively established.
