Former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris D!es At 77, Political Leaders Mourn

Former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris has died at the age of 77 in the United Kingdom, with his death occurring on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

According to Bush Radio Academy, news of the former governor’s death prompted visits from Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello and other government officials, who visited his Abuja residence to commiserate with members of his family. The visit was disclosed by Onogwu Muhammed, Special Adviser to Governor Ododo on Public Relations and Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Bello, in a Facebook post accompanied by photographs.

Idris’ death was also confirmed by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed, according to reports, although details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not immediately made public.

Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as Ibro, governed Kogi State for nearly nine years, beginning his tenure in May 2003. He secured another term after the 2007 governorship election, although the election was later annulled following a legal challenge, leading to a rerun in 2008, which he won. His tenure eventually ended in January 2012, after which Idris Wada succeeded him.

Following the announcement of his death, political figures and other stakeholders began paying tribute to the former governor and visiting his family in Abuja.

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo subsequently declared a three-day mourning period in honour of Idris and announced that the former governor would receive a state burial, with the state government taking responsibility for the burial arrangements.

The death of Ibrahim Idris marks the passing of a former state governor who remained a notable figure in Kogi State’s political history and the Peoples Democratic Party.
