Sowunmi asserted, “I’ll beat him. I’ll question him about his actions in 2014/2015 when the party faced upheaval. I am confident in my ability to beat him.”
However, Sowunmi raised concerns about the potential outcome if Saraki were to emerge as the National Chairman, as it would mean another leader from the North Central geopolitical zone. He perceived this as an inequity towards the South-West region.
He remarked, “If the North Central believes it’s their exclusive right to hold the chairmanship consistently, the South-West can respond, ‘No, we disagree.’”
Sowunmi emphasized the efforts made by the South-West, suggesting that their contributions exceed those from the North Central. He conveyed his readiness to contest for the position and pledged to meet the challenge head-on.
Sowunmi also cautioned against a recurring cycle of leadership changes in the party, urging a more measured approach. He referred to past instances where the PDP experienced changes in leadership.
He reminded, “We had a similar scenario with Ali Modu Sherriff. Then we transitioned to Makarfi, and later Secondus, followed by Ayu. Now, we have Damagum. We must not become a party that repeatedly claims that no one is fit to lead us.”
The PDP has seen fifteen chairpersons over the years, with a notable portion hailing from the North Central region. Currently, Umar Damagum holds the acting position of PDP National Chairman, succeeding lyorchia Ayu in March. Among the chairpersons, six have originated from the North Central region, including Lar, Gemade, Ogbeh, Ali, Baraje, and Ayu.
