Obasanjo issued the warning on Tuesday in Sokoto during the inauguration of the Bakhita ICT Centre at the Catholic Secretariat.
According to him, the threat posed by unchecked population growth could dwarf today’s security challenges.
“By 2050, Nigeria will have about 400 million people who must be fed, employed, and given a decent life. If we fail to prepare for that, the Boko Haram crisis we see today will be child’s play,” Obasanjo said.
The former president stressed that education and knowledge remain critical for national development. He praised Bishop Hassan Matthew Kukah for spearheading the ICT centre, describing it as a facility for all Nigerians regardless of religion, ethnicity, or gender.
Obasanjo also urged Nigerians to embrace unity in diversity, insisting that inclusive governance is key to placing Nigeria among the world’s leading nations.
“If our diversity is managed with good governance and inclusion, we will not only be respected but also counted among the leading nations of the world,” he added.
In his remarks, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, thanked Obasanjo for attending the event and encouraged Nigerians to emulate his commitment to national unity. He also called for collective efforts to tackle insecurity and drive development.
