The tragic incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi.
According to Akinbiyi, the 33,000-litre tanker lost control due to excessive speeding, toppled, and burst into flames.
He explained:
“The case of an inferno caused by a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker, which fell on its side and spilled its contents around 0100hrs today along the Abeokuta-Kobape-Siun-Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway, due to excessive speed and loss of control, has been reported.”
The fire spread quickly, consuming nearby vehicles and damaging power installations.
“The incident also led to the burning of a truck and a tow vehicle, while a PHCN cable supplying electricity to Mowe and its environs was destroyed,” Akinbiyi added.
Emergency response teams, including the Ogun State Fire Service, FRSC, Police, Amotekun Corps, NSCDC, and Nestlé Fire Service, were mobilised to contain the blaze and decant the remaining fuel.
While casualty figures remain uncertain, Akinbiyi confirmed that rescue and emergency personnel are still on site working to restore normalcy after extinguishing the fire.
Traffic along the corridor has been diverted to a single lane to give responders room to operate.
He urged commuters to remain patient and cooperate with officials.
“The general public, particularly motorists plying the route, is advised to stay calm and cooperate with traffic diversion and re-routing measures in place. Any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident is deeply regretted,” he stated.
