The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has apprehended four individuals engaged in illegal mining activities within the state. Commandant Maku Olatunde, speaking in Awka, the state capital, announced the arrests, conducted in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in Anambra State.
The arrests, made on Thursday at Toll Gate, Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area, were part of a nationwide effort directed by the Commandant-General to curb illegal mining. The suspects, identified as Nnamani Chidubem, Ekemezie Ifeanyi, Okolie Patrick, and Onyedika Somtoo, were caught mining laterite without proper authorization, leading to environmental degradation in the area.
Commandant Olatunde emphasized that such activities undermine the economy and pose environmental risks, urging stakeholders to operate only with valid licenses and at approved mining sites. Exhibits recovered from the suspects included a truck loaded with laterite and various mining equipment.
The suspects are currently in custody undergoing further investigation and will face legal action. Henry Bolarinwa, the Federal Mines Officer for Anambra State, stressed the importance of regulatory compliance to prevent revenue losses and environmental harm associated with illegal mining.
