The meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m., was announced in a letter from the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, on Sunday. However, the lawmakers failed to attend, instead continuing with their legislative duties as usual.
Signs of the lawmakers’ refusal surfaced on Sunday when a viral video showed Lolo Isiah Opuende, representing Akuku-Toru Constituency 2, ridiculing the invitation.
In the footage, Opuende criticized the method of communication, saying, “How can you write a letter for the House of Assembly and post it on social media, expecting us to come? The governor should follow proper protocol.”
He further hinted at the lawmakers’ unwillingness to engage with Fubara, adding, “The governor should ‘dey his dey’ (stay on his own), and we will be on our own.”
Impeachment Moves Loom as Budget Deadline Passes
With the 48-hour deadline for Governor Fubara to present the 2025 budget now expired, speculation is growing that lawmakers may be preparing to initiate impeachment proceedings.
This development follows a statement from the factional Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, who openly urged the governor to either resign or face removal.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Okocha stressed that the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Rivers Assembly crisis was final and must be obeyed.
“The Supreme Court judgment is sacrosanct. Nothing can be added or removed,” he declared.
“As a political party, we advise the governor to choose between two options: resign honorably or be impeached. That is the APC’s stance today.”
