Fresh Shock In Osun As Emir Is Laid To Rest, Police Discover Another Body

The remains of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade and an ally of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, have been laid to rest at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo in accordance with traditional rites.

According to Bush Radio Academy, traditionalists conducted the burial rites in the presence of close family members and priests, while associates of the deceased who accompanied his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital were reportedly asked to remain outside the premises during the ceremony.

Tension reportedly arose at the hospital after some suspected associates of the deceased allegedly attacked two morgue workers upon discovering that they were recording the proceedings with their mobile phones. Additional police vehicles were subsequently deployed to the facility and helped restore calm.

Emir, a chieftain of the Accord Party in Osun State, was reportedly shot dead on Sunday during a clash at the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife. The confrontation allegedly involved him and a group led by another National Union of Road Transport Workers leader known as Sibi.

Governor Adeleke, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed Emir’s death and directed the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting have also been linked to alleged efforts by some members of the transport union to install Emir as the next Osun State chairman of the NURTW.

Providing an update on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that another corpse had been recovered from the Mayfair Motor Park, bringing the reported death toll from the incident to two.

Ojelabi said the governor had ordered the closure of the motor park following the violence and that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

The police spokesperson urged individuals being mentioned in connection with the incident to report themselves at the nearest police station instead of using social media to defend themselves.

He added that the Commissioner of Police had assured the public that everyone found to be involved in the incident would be arrested and prosecuted regardless of their status.

The latest development has heightened concerns in Osun following the deadly clash, while security agencies continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the individuals allegedly connected to the violence.
