President Tinubu Pledges Commitment to Building a Modern, Empowered Nigeria Police Force

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a well-trained, well-equipped, and highly motivated Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the inaugural National Police Day celebration held on Monday at Eagle Square, Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the crucial role of the police in safeguarding the nation’s security and democracy.

The event, which also marked the commencement of the 2025 Police Week, witnessed the formal announcement of April 7 as an annual National Police Day—a symbolic move to honour the sacrifices of fallen officers and celebrate the heroism of serving personnel.

“As President, I renew our administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the welfare and operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force,” Tinubu stated. “The security of our nation is foundational to our shared prosperity, and this begins with ensuring that our police are properly trained, equipped, and motivated.”

He announced immediate steps toward comprehensive police reforms and improved welfare. These include plans for better housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for officers’ children. Tinubu also assured of imminent enhancements in police salaries, benefits, and access to modern crime-fighting tools and technologies.

“We are determined to match the responsibilities and risks faced by our officers with adequate compensation and support. Anything short of this would be unacceptable,” he declared.

Describing the police as the bedrock of national security, Tinubu highlighted their critical role as both defenders of democracy and protectors of lives and property.

He explained the importance of National Police Day, saying, “This is not just a date. It is a powerful symbol of our deep respect for the Nigeria Police Force and our enduring partnership. It’s a time to honour officers who paid the ultimate price and to show our commitment to those who continue to serve.”

Tinubu also praised Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his dedication to reforms that align with the administration’s vision for a modern, efficient, and human-rights-focused police system.

Earlier, IGP Egbetokun described the day as a vital moment to remember the sacrifices of fallen heroes and celebrate the bravery of officers across various operations nationwide. He said it also serves as a platform to renew the call for professionalism, excellence, and respect for human rights within the force.
