Former Coordinators of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political wing affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across 12 local government areas in Rivers State, have expressed their unwavering support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Representing regions including Obio/Akpor, Ogu/Bolo, Port Harcourt City, Opobo/Nkoro, Gokana, Bonny, Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Oyigbo, Asari-Toru, and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas, the ex-coordinators, led by Collins Onunwo from Obio/Akpor, visited Governor Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
They clarified that their decision to step down from their roles in GDI and align with the Simplified Movement was in the best interest of the people of Rivers State.
Collins Onunwo, the former coordinator in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and a former chairman of the region, conveyed that GDI’s primary mission was to safeguard, uphold, and advance the interests of Rivers State and its residents. He emphasized that, having voted for and endorsed Fubara, affirmed by the Supreme Court, GDI had no choice but to back the governor for success.
Onunwo assured the public of the former GDI coordinators’ commitment to supporting the current administration’s policies and programs, emphasizing that Rivers’ interest took precedence over their allegiance to GDI.
He stated, “We want the public, Rivers people and all Nigerians to know that GDI is the group founded by the former governor and now Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike. That group brought him to power in 2015 and supported his ambition in 2019. That group is his strength.”
However, he noted the shift in their allegiance, stating, “But today, we and our supporters have decided we are no longer members of GDI. The reason is simple: we want to be with Rivers people. Rivers’ interest is paramount.”
Onunwo highlighted the historical context of GDI’s founding, linking it to supporting President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, and the subsequent victories that brought Nyesom Wike to power in 2015 and 2019.
He concluded, “Today, Rivers’ interest is to protect our votes that brought in Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Executive Governor of Rivers State in the most credible, fair and violence-free election.”
Expressing concern for the protection of their votes and sustaining democracy, Onunwo emphasized their alignment with millions of Rivers’ residents who insist on safeguarding their mandate and supporting the current governor.
