This follows President Bola Tinubu’s decision on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency, dissolve the state government, and appoint an administrator to oversee affairs in the state.
The governors expressed their intention to contest the declaration during a Zoom meeting, emphasizing their commitment to defending democracy and the rule of law.
In a communique signed by Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, the governors strongly criticized the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by the President.
The communique read, “The Forum used this opportunity to address the unfortunate state of emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025, and condemned the purported suspension of the Rivers State leadership.”
The statement further affirmed their dedication to upholding the Constitution and maintaining democratic governance, and it was resolved that the Attorneys General of PDP-controlled states would challenge Section 305 (3) of the Nigerian Constitution through judicial interpretation.
The governors also expressed solidarity with Governor Fubara and the people of Rivers State during this difficult time.
“We stand with His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, and the people of Rivers State in this trying period of the state’s political history,” the communique added.
They urged the citizens of Rivers State and all Nigerians to remain hopeful in the face of what they described as “atrocious intimidation.”
