The nation was left in disbelief when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This sparked a divide, with one camp supporting Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims, while others demanded solid proof before accepting the allegations, arguing that it could be a smear campaign against Akpabio’s character. The absence of widespread solidarity for Akpoti-Uduaghan highlights the persistent challenges women face in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.

Tensions between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan escalated when the Senate President, during a plenary session, chastised his colleague, remarking that the Senate “is not a nightclub where anybody can talk anyhow.”

This conflict intensified when a viral video surfaced, showing Akpoti-Uduaghan accusing Akpabio of moving her seat without informing her. The situation took a dramatic turn when, in late February, Akpoti-Uduaghan gave an interview on Arise TV, accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment. She claimed that during one interaction, Akpabio suggested that she advance a motion if she “took care” of him. In another instance, she alleged that during a tour of his house, Akpabio held her hand and said, “I’m going to create time for us to come spend quality moments here. You will enjoy it.”

Akpabio vehemently denied the accusations, asserting that he has never harassed any woman.

Just days after her claims, Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months. The suspension was officially explained as a result of her “gross misconduct and unruly behavior,” not linked to the harassment allegations.

Unoma Akpabio, the Senate President’s wife, dismissed the allegations as defamatory, defending her husband as a disciplined and respected individual, whose jovial nature is often misinterpreted. Former Senate Minority Leader, Abiodun Olujimi, who knew Akpabio personally, also defended him, explaining that he is known for his frequent jokes.

Current female senators quickly rejected Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations, while one former senator suggested her claims were a “sign of weakness” and that sexual harassment was only an issue in schools.

What remains clear from the responses is that Akpabio is known for his humor. However, the issue arises when such jokes are not well-received by the person they are directed at, raising important questions about respecting boundaries and avoiding harm. If someone feels uncomfortable or insulted, it may be wiser to reconsider the tone of such comments, particularly when they can be perceived as inappropriate.

In a political landscape where women hold just 17 out of 360 seats in the House of Representatives and only three out of 109 in the Senate, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension further marginalizes women in the political arena.

Sexually charged jokes, which are often accepted or overlooked, continue to contribute to a culture of harassment, undermining women’s dignity and self-worth.
