Nollywood actress, filmmaker and producer Funke Akindele is celebrating her 49th birthday today, August 24, 2026, marking another milestone in a career that has spanned almost three decades.

Born in Ikorodu, Lagos State, in 1977, Akindele has grown from a television actress into one of the most influential and commercially successful figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Her journey has been defined by memorable performances, successful film productions and a strong presence both on and off the screen.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Akindele first gained widespread recognition through the United Nations-sponsored television series Need to Know, where she portrayed Bisi, a bright and inquisitive secondary school student. The series, which aired from 1997 to 2002, gave the young actress an important platform to showcase her talent and connect with a wider Nigerian audience.

Beyond acting, Akindele pursued higher education. She studied Mass Communication at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, obtaining an Ordinary National Diploma, before proceeding to the University of Lagos to study Law. Her career received a major boost following the release of Jenifa in 2008. In the movie, Akindele played the title character, a young woman whose comic experiences after relocating from a rural community to Lagos became a major attraction for viewers.
