Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday evening, Ologbondiyan pointed out that Akpabio had received nearly four votes of confidence in under two years, suggesting internal instability within the Senate.
Earlier in the day, The PUNCH reported that the Senate unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Akpabio during a plenary session. The motion, moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olarere Oyewumi (Osun West), came just 48 hours after suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of suspending her over her sexual harassment allegations at the Inter-Parliamentary Union in New York.
Ologbondiyan argued that votes of confidence are typically a response to crises, implying ongoing tensions in the Senate.
“Senator Godswill Akpabio might be the first Senate President to receive nearly four votes of confidence in less than two years. That alone should be troubling for him and the institution,” he stated.
He further noted that if the Senate were truly united, such votes wouldn’t be necessary. “A vote of confidence usually signals unrest. If the Senate were at peace, these repeated votes wouldn’t be needed. And if there is peace, it might just be a peace of the graveyard,” he remarked.
On the Senate’s recent passage of the Tax Reform bills for a second reading, Ologbondiyan acknowledged the move as commendable but emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny to ensure fairness.
“If properly processed, these reforms could improve the system. However, since they will undergo public hearings, Nigerians must ensure they aren’t skewed in favor of any individual, group, or party,” he concluded.
