Gbadamosi Fires Back At Tokunbo Wahab: You Want To Punish Lagosians With Disease

The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State, Babatunde Gbadamosi, has criticised the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, following a video shared by the commissioner showing government officials participating in a waste-clearing exercise.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Wahab had posted footage of himself and other Lagos State Government officials clearing refuse as part of efforts to improve sanitation across parts of the state.

Reacting to the video, Gbadamosi questioned whether the commissioner intended to personally oversee the removal of waste across the various areas of Lagos where he claimed refuse had accumulated.

Gbadamosi specifically mentioned Ikorodu, Epe and Lagos Island, asking whether Wahab planned to tackle waste collection “street by street, bridge by bridge, gutter by gutter and canal by canal.”

The ADC politician described the exercise as “performative misgovernance” and alleged that the state government was allowing refuse to overwhelm parts of Lagos. He further accused the administration of failing to adequately address the state’s waste management challenges.

Gbadamosi also claimed that he had previously offered suggestions to Wahab on ways to tackle the waste problem but alleged that the commissioner had declined to act on them. He subsequently accused the government of exposing residents to potential health risks through poor waste management.

Wahab, however, dismissed the criticism and said he would not give Gbadamosi the attention he was seeking. In a response on X, the commissioner said Gbadamosi had repeatedly attempted to attract his attention but that he would instead allow him to “wail aimlessly.”

The commissioner also turned the criticism back on Gbadamosi, alleging that the ADC politician had previously failed to successfully manage an estate with fewer than 100 residents. Wahab further made an allegation concerning AMEN Estate, claiming that Gbadamosi had attempted to fraudulently take control of the estate from its female owner before eventually being removed.

The exchange has added another layer to the ongoing public debate over waste management, sanitation and environmental conditions in Lagos, with both politicians offering sharply different assessments of the state government’s handling of the issue.
