German Firm Responds To NAFDAC’s Nivea Ban, Claims Discontinuation Of Sales Since 2022Following the ban on Nivea Black and White Invisible Roll-On Deodorant, Beiersdorf, the German company behind the brand, has clarified that this product was discontinued in 2022 and is neither sold nor advertised in Nigeria.

The Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) previously issued a warning about the deodorant, citing its recall in Europe due to the presence of harmful chemicals not permitted in cosmetics. Specifically, NAFDAC highlighted the dangerous chemical 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde) (BMHCA), which can adversely affect reproductive health and cause skin irritation and burns.

According to current European legislation, the use of BMHCA in cosmetics has been banned since March 1, 2022. In response to NAFDAC’s stance, Beiersdorf stated that the product batch in question (No. 93529610) has never been marketed in Nigeria and that it expired in January 2022, thus complying with existing regulations at that time.

The company emphasized its dedication to global safety standards and rigorous quality checks for its products. They confirmed that all NIVEA products have been reformulated to exclude BMHCA well in advance of the EU regulation. Furthermore, they noted that the NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-On Deodorant has been free from BMHCA since at least 2020, including in Nigeria.
