The ruling, delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, mandates the government to prevent assaults on journalists and to thoroughly investigate, prosecute, and punish those responsible for such attacks.
In Lagos, MRA’s Head of Legal Department, Ms. Obioma Okonkwo, criticized the government’s ongoing disregard for the ruling, calling it “an affront to justice and the rule of law.” She noted that the court granted MRA’s eight requested declarations and issued three mandatory orders to ensure the safety of media practitioners.
Ms. Okonkwo highlighted the court’s directive for the Federal Government to implement measures that protect journalists and address attacks against them. She expressed concern over the government’s inaction, stating, “The culture of impunity fostered by the Federal Government’s failure to enforce the court’s judgment is alarming.”
She further remarked, “Crimes against journalists frequently go unresolved, allowing perpetrators to escape punishment. This impunity not only emboldens those who wish to harm journalists but also erodes public trust in the rule of law and democratic governance.”
Ms. Okonkwo called on the government to prioritize journalist protection through concrete actions, including strengthening legal frameworks and ensuring swift prosecution of offenders.
On this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the MRA reiterated its call for the Federal Government to take decisive steps to guarantee journalists’ safety in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the court’s February 16 judgment.
