German Police Bust International Dating Scam: 11 Nigerians Arrested

German authorities have apprehended 11 Nigerian nationals suspected of affiliation with a Black Axe faction implicated in an extensive dating scam and money laundering scheme.

In an announcement on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, Bavarian police revealed that the group engaged in various forms of criminal activity, primarily targeting Germany with dating fraud and money laundering endeavors.

Describing the dating ruse as a contemporary iteration of matrimonial deceit, authorities stated, “By assuming false identities, the perpetrators feigned matrimonial intentions and subsequently solicited money under various pretenses during subsequent interactions.”

The funds were then funneled to Black Axe operatives in Nigeria through intermediary financial channels.

Authorities disclosed that the syndicate employed a method of money laundering based on commodities, often masking transactions under the guise of charitable ventures, which were then shipped to Nigeria.

A staggering 450 incidents of romance and affection scams were reported in Bavaria in 2023, resulting in damages totaling 5.3 million euros ($5.7 million).

The suspects, all Nigerian citizens aged between 29 and 53, were apprehended in nationwide crackdowns on Tuesday, with law enforcement agencies raiding 19 locations, including residences and asylum centers.

Emphasizing the Black Axe’s structured hierarchy, with leadership based in Nigeria overseeing territorial divisions, authorities highlighted the group’s substantial sway over political and administrative spheres within Nigeria.

Globally, the gang’s operations encompass human trafficking, fraud, money laundering, prostitution, and drug trade, underscoring its extensive criminal footprint.

This decisive action against Black Axe marks the inaugural operation of its kind within Germany, signaling a concerted effort by law enforcement to dismantle transnational criminal networks operating within its borders.
