Germany Issues Fresh Visa Advisory To Nigerians, Warns Against Visa Agents

The German Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh advisory to Nigerians applying for visas, warning applicants against paying agents or sending their documents by email in an attempt to secure appointments.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the mission issued the clarification on Wednesday amid concerns over the proper procedure for beginning German visa applications. Applicants were urged to rely on official German government channels and follow the procedures applicable to their individual visa categories.

The mission advised prospective travellers to first determine the appropriate visa category based on the purpose and duration of their intended stay. A Schengen visa generally applies to short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including tourism and family visits, while national visas are generally required for stays exceeding 90 days for purposes such as employment, study, vocational training and certain family-reunification cases.

Applicants were also advised to establish which German diplomatic mission in Nigeria is responsible for processing their applications before proceeding with the process. They are expected to use the official online appointment or registration system applicable to their visa category and comply with the instructions provided.

For certain long-stay visa categories, applicants can begin the process through Germany’s Consular Services Portal. However, the mission stressed that starting an application online does not remove the requirement for an in-person appointment where applicants need to submit original documents, provide biometric information or undergo other necessary checks.

The German Mission specifically warned Nigerians against paying individuals or third parties simply to obtain visa appointments, stressing that official appointment booking is free. Applicants were also advised to ensure that their appointments correspond with the correct visa category to avoid delays or the need to secure a new appointment.

The mission further cautioned applicants against sending visa documents to the consulate by email as a means of securing appointments or submitting applications. Instead, applicants should prepare the required documents and submit them through the prescribed official channels.

At the required in-person appointments, applicants may be asked to provide their documents and biometric information and answer questions relating to their applications. The mission urged Nigerians to be cautious of individuals or organisations offering visa appointments in exchange for payment.

For eligible national visa categories, applicants may use the Consular Services Portal to submit an initial application and receive instructions on subsequent steps. The German Mission said following the official procedure would help applicants avoid unnecessary payments, incorrect applications and delays in visa processing.
