According to the official results, Mahama received 6,328,397 votes, which accounts for 56.55% of the total votes, defeating his closest rival, incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes, or 41.6%. Mahama won in 13 of Ghana’s 16 regions, while Bawumia, who conceded defeat on Sunday, only secured victory in three regions.
The election saw a total of twelve candidates vying for the presidency, and the NDC emerged victorious in both the presidential and parliamentary elections. The NDC is poised to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament.
In her address, Jane Mensa, the chairman of the Electoral Commission, commended Vice President Bawumia for conceding defeat even before the official declaration of results, calling it a testament to the election’s fairness and credibility.
In a related development, Ghanaian actor John Dumelo, who ran for office in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, scored a major political victory. Dumelo, representing the NDC, defeated the incumbent, Lydia Alhassan of the NPP, with a commanding 40,561 votes compared to Alhassan’s 27,377 votes.
