Recalling the confusion surrounding President Umaru Musa Yar’adua’s health, Jonathan noted that Iwuanyanwu consistently prayed for him during a period of national uncertainty. Yar’adua, who took office in 2007 after succeeding Olusegun Obasanjo, fell gravely ill and ultimately passed away in 2010. Complicating matters further was Yar’adua’s failure to formally inform the National Assembly, which would have allowed Jonathan, then Vice President, to assume presidential duties as outlined in Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution.
Jonathan emphasized the importance of Iwuanyanwu’s support during those challenging times, highlighting the late leader’s dedication to the nation’s welfare. The service attracted numerous dignitaries and well-wishers, all gathered to pay their respects to Iwuanyanwu, whose contributions to society and leadership were widely acknowledged.
“When President Yar’adua was ill, and there was confusion in the country, Iwuanyanwu always prayed for me. He was a committed politician who significantly contributed to society’s development. We thank God for his life; he served God faithfully,” Jonathan said.
Former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa described Iwuanyanwu as a great patriot and a pillar of support from the creation of Imo State until his death. “It’s very painful to lose him, but as Christians, we believe he will find a better life after this,” he added.
Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim shared his sorrow, stating, “I have lost a father. The Nigerian federation has lost a patriot. May his soul rest in peace.” Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, represented by the deputy governor, urged everyone to consider how they would be remembered after death.
The session was attended by former Senate Presidents Adolphus Wabara and Ken Nnamani, ministers, burial committee chairman Senator Ben Obi, and various government officials.
