The announcement was made during Ekiye’s musical concert and album launch, titled “Ebikamo Experience,” held on Sunday in Yenagoa.
Governor Diri stated that the appointment recognizes Ekiye’s dedication to promoting the Ijaw language through his music, aligning with the administration’s commitment to preserving the language from extinction. He also acknowledged Ekiye’s passion for language preservation and highlighted ongoing efforts to train Ijaw teachers and implement more initiatives to safeguard the language.
Expressing his gratitude, Governor Diri remarked, “On behalf of our government of Assured Prosperity, I want to say a big thank you to you and your team. A prophet may not be recognized in his hometown, but you are celebrated here. I am pleased with your achievements as an Ijaw gospel musician, and I am appointing you as the Ambassador of Ijaw Language.”
He also urged parents to teach their children the Ijaw language and called for collective efforts to preserve it. The governor emphasized that Bayelsa remains peaceful and encouraged continued support for both the state and federal governments.
During the event, Asu Ekiye enthralled the audience with energetic performances, even drawing the governor to the dance floor.
The concert was graced by prominent personalities, including the state Chief Judge, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, Yenagoa Constituency 1 Representative Ayibanegiyefa Egba, Chief of Staff Dr. Peter Akpe, his deputy Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, and esteemed Ijaw music artists like Barrister Smooth and Alfred Izonebi.
