Governor Makinde explained that NEC called for the withdrawal of the bill to ensure members could review its contents before granting their endorsement.
He shared this during a Saturday online interactive session with Oyo State residents via his social media platforms, tagged #AskSeyiMakinde.
“The bill was presented to the National Economic Council (NEC) for approval, but when we asked for the bill, we were informed it was already at the National Assembly. We questioned why it was brought to us for approval after being sent to the National Assembly. Consequently, we requested its withdrawal to allow for broader consultations and alignment. I served as the spokesperson, but the decision was unanimous among NEC members,” Makinde explained.
The governor affirmed the importance of the Tax Reform Bill, noting that reforms are necessary for progress. However, he emphasized the need for adequate stakeholder engagement to ensure alignment and buy-in.
“My stance is that reform is essential. You can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results. However, even when pursuing reforms, it is crucial to consult stakeholders and ensure alignment. Consultation is key,” he added.
