“We value their openness and constructive engagement. We discussed the pivotal role that local governments play in maintaining a well-functioning primary healthcare system in Nigeria,” stated Pate.
He highlighted the 2014 National Health Act’s vision of integrating healthcare services under one roof, establishing a national health system that assigns responsibilities across federal, state, and local levels. Local governments are pivotal in delivering essential health services to tackle common health issues and promote preventive care.
The meeting also provided a platform for the Ministry and local government leaders to discuss the Federal Government’s sector-wide health compact programme, aimed at fostering coherence and collaboration among all levels of government.
Pate acknowledged recent developments concerning local government autonomy, stressing the need for intensified engagement between the Federal Government and local authorities.
“The Compact facilitates a unified approach to healthcare delivery, aligning efforts and resources towards achieving shared health objectives. While local governments have been integral to the Compact from the outset, recent developments underscore their increasingly robust and influential role,” he affirmed.
