Governor Alia Breaks Silence: “Federal Government Standing Strong With Benue On Insecurity

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has dismissed claims that the Federal Government has abandoned the state in the face of escalating violence by suspected armed herdsmen.

During an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Monday, Alia asserted that President Bola Tinubu has consistently provided “full support” to Benue in its fight to secure communities from what he called “bloodthirsty marauders.”

Alia highlighted that federal intervention has significantly curbed the level of occupation by armed groups, stating, “Out of 23 local government areas, 17 were once under siege. We’ve reduced that number to nine, then to six, and now to just three – thanks to the Federal Government’s backing.”

He credited the Presidency with deploying three special security units to the state following a particularly intense wave of attacks. According to him, these deployments helped push the invaders out of several overrun communities.

“If the President didn’t understand the severity of the situation, he wouldn’t be extending such robust support,” Alia added.

Despite the progress, attacks have persisted. On Friday, June 15, 2025, suspected herdsmen launched a deadly night raid on the Yelewata community in Guma LGA, killing at least 59 people, including military and civil defence personnel who tried to shield residents.

The tragic incident is the latest in a string of relentless attacks. In April 2025, similar raids in Ukum and Logo LGAs claimed around 60 lives, while in May, 42 more were killed in Gwer West LGA.
