The resolution, adopted during a plenary session on Thursday led by Speaker Chief Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, was influenced by findings from the House Standing Committee on Rules and Business. This committee reviewed BSIEC operations, including the establishment of council wards and preparations for local government elections.
The House also recommended that the state government improve the commission’s resources by hiring additional staff, providing operational vehicles, and constructing a modern office facility.
Comr. Saater Tiseer, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Rules and Business, cited several issues within the commission, including a shortage of personnel, insufficient vehicles, inadequate access to the headquarters, and a weak ICT unit.
In support of Dr. Chen’s removal, Hon. Alfred Emberga of Makurdi North State Constituency criticized the chairman’s incompetence and lack of integrity, arguing that his continued presence would further damage the commission’s reputation.
During the session, the House also reviewed a report from the committee on Water Resources, Environment, and Climate Change, which was referred to the Committee on Rules and Business for further discussion.
Governor Alia swiftly endorsed the assembly’s resolution and directed the immediate removal of Dr. Chen. This was confirmed in a statement from the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, who noted that the chairman was instructed to hand over his duties to the commission’s Administrative Secretary.
Kula emphasized that the governor accepted the assembly’s resolution due to Dr. Chen’s poor judgment and actions that did not align with public interest.
