Chibike Ikenga, the Publicity Secretary of APC in Rivers State, claimed that Governor Fubara’s presentation of the state’s 2024 budget to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led House, followed by its signing, was in violation of court rulings on the matter.
In an interview with News Central on Sunday, Ikenga stated that the Governor’s actions were leading the state into illegal territory.
“I speak for the Rivers State All Progressives Congress, and I will continue to do so. What we have witnessed is a series of illegal actions by the Rivers State government under Governor Fubara. This government has gained a reputation for disregarding court orders and working against the principles laid out in the Federal Constitution, which established the offices of the executive, legislature, and judiciary in Rivers State,” Ikenga said.
He went on to warn that such disregard for the law could lead to heightened tensions, hinder development, and cause division within the state.
On the 2025 budget, Ikenga emphasized that Governor Fubara had violated rulings from both the High Court and the Appeal Court, which had recognized the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. He further stated that despite these legal decisions, the Governor continued to present the budget to the Oko-Jumbo-led House, which was not legally recognized.
“These facts are clear. The courts had ordered the Rivers State government to present the 2025 budget to the House led by Rt Hon Martins Amaewhule, the only recognized House of Assembly in Rivers State. Yet, the government has disregarded these rulings from both the High Court and the Court of Appeal, and we fear they will also ignore any Supreme Court decisions on the matter,” Ikenga concluded.
