The Edo State Security Corps was suspended in September 2024 by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in line with constitutional provisions that assign election security to the Nigeria Police Force, supported by other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). The suspension was specifically tied to the gubernatorial election held on September 21, 2024.
However, with the successful conclusion of the election, Governor Okpebholo has moved to restore the security outfit to strengthen the state’s overall security infrastructure. A statement from the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, emphasized that the reinstatement is aimed at ensuring the continued protection of citizens and their property.
“As part of the reinstatement process, all returning officers are instructed to report to the office of the State Corps Commander or their designated zonal offices (North, Central, South),” the statement read, ensuring a smooth transition for the effective deployment of the Security Corps.
The Governor’s decision reflects his administration’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment for all Edo citizens.
