Governor Okpebholo expressed his gratitude to the traditional leaders for their visit, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening internal security. He emphasized that traditional rulers are vital in maintaining peace, as they have long been the first line of defense in their communities. The Governor highlighted that his administration holds traditional institutions in high regard, citing the recent restoration of the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin as a testament to this commitment.

“I want to commend you for coming to see me. This is a step in the right direction because traditional rulers are crucial instruments for ensuring internal security. Historically, they have always been the first security officers in their communities, knowing both residents and visitors,” Governor Okpebholo said.

He reassured the traditional leaders that his administration is focused on correcting the wrongs of the previous government, particularly in restoring the rights of traditional institutions. “Just a few days ago, we restored the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin Kingdom. We are working to right the wrongs of the past administration,” he added.

The Governor also shared that he recently met with the 18 local government chairmen and requested their records for review, emphasizing that his government will address any issues that arise. “We are committed to investigating all concerns, and any person found to have wrongfully taken what belongs to the traditional rulers will be held accountable,” he stated.

Court Dismisses Another Suit Challenging Tinubu’s Candidacy

Additionally, the leader of the delegation, HRH Oba Idogu III, the Olokpe of Okpe, voiced concerns about the previous administration’s treatment of traditional institutions, particularly in Akoko-Edo, Edo North. He criticized the last government, led by Godwin Obaseki, for undermining the traditional institutions by issuing staff of office to village heads without due process.

“The previous administration caused significant harm to traditional institutions, especially in Akoko-Edo, where village heads were given staff of office by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs without following the proper procedures,” Oba Idogu said.

Governor Okpebholo assured the traditional rulers that his government would work hand-in-hand with them to bring lasting peace and stability to the state, promising to seek their counsel when necessary.
