The governor made these remarks during a meeting with leaders from Abi and Yakurr local government areas, who reaffirmed their loyalty to remain part of Cross River State, even if Ogoja State is established.
While expressing doubts about the practicality of dividing the current Cross River State to form Ogoja State, Governor Otu advocated for the peaceful pursuit of the communities’ aspirations for another state, considering the vastness of the present Cross River State.
Governor Otu assured the people of the security of their lives and properties regardless of the outcome of the state creation process. He emphasized the Abi and Yakurr peoples’ right to self-determination and their sovereign choice regarding their state affiliation.
The governor highlighted the strong cultural bonds that unite the southern regions of the state with the Abi-Yakurr communities, emphasizing the importance of preserving these historical ties.
While supportive of the Abi-Yakurr people’s desire to remain within Cross River State, Governor Otu acknowledged their preference for the potential economic benefits that could accompany the creation of Ogoja State, which they believe would promote significant economic development.
In a statement signed by Dr. Sam Eno, Secretary of the Abi-Yakurr Peoples Assembly, the stakeholders affirmed their support for the creation of Ogoja State, viewing it as a step towards restructuring that could spur economic growth and development.
