Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has vowed to authorize the execution of Shafi’u Abubakar should the court find him guilty and sentence him to death for allegedly setting a mosque ablaze, which resulted in the tragic deaths of worshippers trapped inside.
Earlier reports revealed that during a prayer session, Shafi’u purportedly used petrol to ignite the fire, deliberately locking the mosque’s doors to prevent escape.
The governor, after mandating the perpetrator’s prosecution in Shariah court, clarified that the attack was not driven by extremism or political motives but rather stemmed from familial disputes over inheritance.
Upon returning from an official trip to Abuja, Governor Yusuf visited injured victims at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano. During this visit, he assured the public of his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims of the Gadan village arson, asserting that he would not hesitate to sign the death warrant if the court deems it necessary.
Addressing reporters during the visit, Governor Yusuf emphasized, “The arson incident resulting in the loss of 15 lives was not politically motivated nor a terrorist attack on the state’s residents.”
The governor also made significant donations of N100,000 to each victim, acknowledging that the death toll from the incident had tragically risen to 15.
