The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has stated that it will not take a position on President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, reaffirming its core role as a platform for promoting unified policies and collaborating on the country’s long-term socioeconomic development.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Saturday, NGF’s Director General, Abdulateef Shittu, emphasized that the forum’s function is not to engage in divisive partisan matters. He argued that taking sides on such issues shows a lack of understanding of Nigeria’s political history. “Taking positions on divisive partisan issues, no matter how they are framed, demonstrates a poor grasp of history,” Shittu said.

Rivers State has been struggling with political instability for nearly two years, due to an intense power struggle between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara. This conflict created a governance deadlock, prompting President Tinubu’s intervention.

In response, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday, which led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state House of Assembly for six months. Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed as the Sole Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this time.

NGF Calls for Calm and Confidence in Crisis Management

While refraining from commenting directly on the state of emergency, the NGF urged the public and the media to approach the crisis with understanding and confidence in the management measures put in place.

The forum reiterated that it exists as an umbrella body for subnational governments, aiming to promote unified policy positions and collaborate with stakeholders for sustainable socioeconomic progress and the welfare of the people.

The NGF also emphasized that, as a technical and policy hub composed of governors elected on various platforms, it will steer clear of taking positions that could alienate members with differing political perspectives.

The statement further highlighted that taking positions on contentious partisan issues reflects a lack of historical perspective, especially given that the Forum had recently overcome a significant division due to political differences among its members.

While remaining neutral on the emergency declaration, the NGF reiterated its commitment to bold actions on critical governance and policy issues, such as wages, taxes, education, and universal healthcare.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the NGF’s commitment to working together for the advancement of Nigeria’s governance and development.
