Gowon Shares How He Intervened To Save Obasanjo From Abacha’s WrathFormer Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has shared the emotional story of how he intervened to prevent the execution of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was accused of plotting a coup against Gen. Sani Abacha in 1995. Gowon, speaking at the inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival organized by the Plateau State Government, revealed that he wrote a letter to Abacha, pleading for Obasanjo’s life.
“I wrote a letter to Abacha; I pleaded with him that God made him a leader to do good and not evil,” Gowon recounted. “I sent my wife with the letter in the middle of the night to Abacha in Abuja, asking him to stop the execution. I pleaded that such a thing should not happen.”
Gowon expressed relief that shortly after his intervention, circumstances changed, and Obasanjo was released from prison in 1998 following Abacha’s death. Obasanjo went on to become the President of Nigeria in 1999.
“This is something that only prayers and sincerity can achieve,” Gowon said. “I’m glad that today, both myself and Obasanjo are here together, celebrating the unity of Plateau.”
Both Gowon and Obasanjo were special guests of honor at the event, where they also thanked the Plateau State Government for organizing the Christmas Carol, which they said would foster unity among the state’s people. Gowon acknowledged the state’s ongoing security challenges, noting that the carol offered an important opportunity for the people to come together in peace.
He also praised Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and support unity within the state.
